Sculpting a new way of being
Dec 12 2018

When I was little, about 10 years old, I started sculpting a ballerina during art class. Two of my friends came over to see, presumably everyone was sculpting something or other, and they giggled and called others to come see my piece. Perhaps I had reached her bottom and this may have caused some controversy, nervous pre-pubescent giggles and what not, but being the over-sensitive person that I was, I decided to crumple my ballerina into a lump never to be sculpted again.

As you may have noticed via FB, I am in Caracas. My home until I was 18. I am not really here on holiday, although it may seem so. The interesting thing about this journey is sensing how a plan can change or be adapted. It is simple- it is all about trust. On a daily basis we hear the worst about Venezuela. And it’s true you have to have your wits about you. But no more than anywhere else. Venezuela is a population of inspired, hard working and creative individuals. I am lucky to know and meet such diverse personalities and I wish to never close to one stream of information. I absorb the world from all perspectives. I believe if we are open to communicate we will find many people  eager to reciprocate. I put these moments of solidarity before fear.

Many years ago I was positively certain my career would be in illustration and design. It was a happy marriage between Fine Art and Fashion Design that saw me spend most of my uni years drawing. Drawing for designs, drawing for pleasure. I did spend most of my day and night behind my drawing pad, and surrounded by magazine cut-outs.  It was the preferred choice to going out. Having always needed to make, I pursued the challenges of expanding a 2d drawing into a 3d piece. But still, a good doodle, nowadays on the computer, or in a notebook- is a space of pure peace. These are a collection of my design work over the years….

An epiphany is cause of much upset when you don’t have one. And when you do have one it seems as though there would be no time to realise you were having one, in order to do something about it. I recall in my youth, the days when there was talk of this sudden “big bang” and all would be revealed. I have been thinking about this a lot these past few weeks, while not able to stop working. In fact, I think about this quite regularly, and not only these past few weeks.

It’s that time of year, the buzzing of carnivals and festivities across the UK and ailleurs, and now more connected than ever – we can feel part of, regardless of place and time. I have been quiet on the website- admittedly it’s easier to post updates on facebook and instagram (the new addition) and to continue working out the wonders of twitter.. so I’ve decided I will take this evening to load up the latest gigs and adventures and take it from the roots! The LEF –  a fantastic opportunity, and very much a challenge. Many lovely connections made and it definitely has made me think “business”. It was an inspiring evening and I personally achieved my goal to rethink the way I think about business and what I have to do to sell it. Some brilliant pitches, successes for all, and I am now reconnected with the biking world- thanks to a very kind gentleman who listened and put his hand up. Along with many other supporters- very thankful for pledges made, and the interest in the journey of making.
